LCC infrastructure: China, India and elsewhere

India spends only one-seventh of China’s $50 billion investment in public works each year. Result? China’s better infrastructure and easier rules helped the country draw $60 billion of investment from overseas companies last year, as manufacturers built factories to take advantage of low wages – while India attracted $5 billion.

India – now seeking to catch up – plans to step up spending on roads, ports and telecommunications to attract manufacturers and spur industrial production.

What does it mean to your business? In this session you will:

  • Find out about infrastructure investments in major LCC’s and compare countries across regions
  • Learn which low-cost regions offer the best developed infrastructure at the moment
  • Hear how to shorten long lead times in low-cost countries

SESSION ONE: GEOGRAPHICAL ROUNDTABLES – SOURCING IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD

Which low-cost country regions offer the greatest opportunities for YOUR business?

This session enables you to compare wages, infrastructure, and supplier capabilities across the regions. You’ll take part in an informal discussion led by industry experts, enabling you to get to know your peers – and make your own voice heard.

1. CHINA: The Gold Rush
China already accounts for a vast amount of the world’s production, including 75% of toys, 20% of steel and 18% of apparel and textiles. Here, you will find the world’s most competitive wages and strong government support for keeping domestic manufacturing operations as inexpensive as possible – which taken together, delivers enormous cost-cutting potential. But you need to be careful – especially when it comes to the realities of the China-based supply chain. Our expert advice can help you sidestep costly mistakes, since China can also be a logistics nightmare, with the country’s sheer size and primitive infrastructure making it difficult to move your products. Come and learn how to solve your distribution problems, and identify and overcome other tough challenges in the world’s fastest-growing economy.

Manuel Amaya Senior Mgr Purchased Finished Good OPNA (Office Products NA) Avery Dennison

2. INDIA: The Ideal Location?
India is a valued supply market for services and information technology and its pool of 25 million educated, English-speaking workers is expanding by a million every year. The rapid growth of IT and BPO services has had an impact on wage rates. Although having said that, India is the one of the few countries whose working population is projected to grow for the next 40 years, keeping wages low. Does that make it your ideal business choice? Find out the pros and cons of sourcing in India.

Maria Prince Director - Strategic Sourcing Limited Brands

3. CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE: Can you profit from new cost cutting opportunities?
Central and Eastern Europe is emerging as an excellent alternative to China for LCC sourcing. Labor rates here may not be as low, but the shipping distances to Western Europe are much shorter, resulting in lower freight total landed costs. Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary are already established as successful choices. However, even lower costs are beginning to drive companies further east into Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Russia, where labor rates can be 70% lower than other European countries. Find out what challenges are posed by moving to Eastern Europe, along with the pros and cons of sourcing in this region.

Christian Verstraete Solutions & Technology Integration Manufacturing & Distribution Industry Hewlett-Packard

4. LATIN AMERICA: Continent of contrasts
Geographical proximity and membership of economic zones make Latin America an attractive choice for US companies. However, this region is full of contrasts. Many Latin American countries have been under dictatorship, and problems with roads and infrastructure are common. Labor costs are lower, compared, for example, to more developed Mexico. But which factors are most important if you are thinking about sourcing from Latin America? We can help you make an informed choice.

Shariar Shaghafi VP Global Supply Chain & Materials Operation Novellus

5. MEXICO: Your best choice?
The Mexican economy has been transformed in the last decade – and has achieved single-digit inflation for five consecutive years.
Labor rates are one-ninth that of the US, making Mexico an extremely competitive choice – especially when you consider it takes only 2-6 days for deliveries to reach any mainland US location by truck. So is Mexico the most advantageous choice for your company? Is there any reason to look elsewhere?

Yegiang "Bill" He Senior Manager Accenture

6. AFRICA: Ideal for sourcing?
African countries are high on the list of sourcing destinations for manufacturers who want an alternative to China. Especially when it comes to apparel. Africa has terrific fabrics and colors and production standards are improving dramatically. Infrastructure might not be as sophisticated as China, but then again, China wasn’t sophisticated even ten years ago. Is this enough to seriously consider Africa as your region to source from? And how is the continent likely to develop in the next few years?

7. SOUTH-EAST ASIA: Economic hotspots
Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Vietnam , Malaysia – have you considered any of these LCC’s? Their economies, with regional growth accelerating as much as 6% a year. Malaysia, in particular, is profiting from rising global demand for electronics and is the choice of giants like Apple and Microsoft. What about other countries in the region? What’s fueling their growth – and how can you cash in?
Christopher Sollitto Supply Chain Solutions Manager Arrow Electronics

3.00PM - 4.25PM

SESSION TWO: YOUR CHANCE TO QUIZ SIX EXPERTS ON A 1-to-1 BASIS

This is an unprecedented opportunity to sit down with genuine experts from up to six companies and ask them as many questions as you like.

And because every meeting is strictly on a one-to-one basis, you can ask whatever you like, knowing that whatever’s said will remain confidential.

When you consider the cost of hiring consultants, this phase of the Conference alone has the potential to repay your investment many, many times over.

Limited places are available. To secure your place, immediate booking is strongly recommended.

3.00PM - 4.25PM

SESSION THREE: LCC SOURCING FOR BEGINNERS

If you are still in the process of drawing up your sourcing strategies, this Workshop is a must! Come and find out how to progress LCCS from an interesting idea into a solid plan of action.

We’ll take you step by step through the sourcing process and help you to take key decisions about what to source, where to source it from, and how to make it happen.

You’ll examine:

  • The three strongest reasons to source from low-cost countries: Direct cost savings, local talent and access to the domestic market
  • How to put a number on the savings you can anticipate from cost migration
  • The best indicators in your particular industry to help you decide if it’s time to source from low-cost countries
  • How much it will cost to shift elsewhere – and where to go
